WASHINGTON, DC - American Forests is again in the running to receive American Express Members Project funding to plant 1.5 million trees in areas of California that have been devastated by recent wildfires.

Now in its second year, the American Express Members Project is a large scale initiative that allows American Express cardholders to nominate projects that inspire passion and create positive change. The winner will receive $1.5 million to implement their project.

Through October 14th, members of the public can vote for American Forests’ California Wildfire ReLeaf project at American Express Members Project. American Forests would be able to plant 1.5 million trees in areas of California devastated by recent catastrophic wildfires.

Kim Harris, an American Express member, nominated American Forests for the project. “It is my goal to help restore our forest. As a mother, I feel that tree planting also helps ensure that the earth will be healthy and thriving long after our generation has passed and it will be our children's turn to care for it,” Harris stated.

Every summer, millions of forested acres throughout the United States are destroyed by forest fires. Due to the intense heat of those fires in California, areas are often burned beyond the ecosystem’s ability to quickly recover without human intervention.
The destruction of these forests results in a loss of wildlife habitat for native species and recreational opportunities for local communities.

American Forests was a finalist in last year’s American Express Members Project, and is looking to improve its placing for the 2008 campaign. “We are very proud to have been nominated by Ms. Harris,” said Deborah Gangloff, Executive Director of American Forests. “We ask that people help us plant 1.5 million trees to restore wildfire-damaged forests by going to the American Express Members Project website and voting for our California Wildfire ReLeaf project.”
