New York, NY – February 18, 2009 – Nielsen Business Media, a part of The Nielsen Company, a global information and media company, and American Forests, the nation’s oldest nonprofit citizens’ conservation organization, today announced they have joined together in a year-long campaign to help improve the environment by planting 30,000 trees globally. The trees will be planted in the names of Nielsen Business Media clients as part of American Forests’ Global ReLeaf Campaign. These trees will restore areas damaged by wildfire and other natural disasters, replace critical wildlife habitat, and clean the environment’s air and water.

“We are thrilled to be working with American Forests on their noble initiative to help ensure the preservation of our planet,” said Mark Hosbein, Senior Vice President, Marketing for Nielsen Business Media. “We believe that ‘doing well’ in business should not be at the expense of ‘doing good’ in the community. That’s why, as part of our commitment to our clients, we are delighted to continually find innovative ways to not only help them grow their businesses, but also create a cleaner environment and grow a greener future for us all.”

“We are thrilled to partner with Nielsen Business Media to plant trees and highlight the values they provide to people and our environment,” said American Forests’ Executive Director Deborah Gangloff.

Global ReLeaf is American Forests’ education and action program that helps individuals, organizations, agencies and corporations improve the local and global environment by planting and caring for trees. By the end of 2008, American Forests had planted over 25 million trees in more than 500 projects across the United States and internationally. It is the goal at American Forests to continue to plant millions of trees in new Global ReLeaf projects across the country and the globe. In under-developed areas, trees are planted in ecosystem restoration projects called Global ReLeaf Forests. Many of these areas have been damaged by natural or human causes. These trees help clean the air and water, filter polluted runoff, slow global warming and erosion, and provide habitat for wildlife.

The trees that Nielsen will plant:

  • Are enough in number to cover the Dallas Cowboys football stadium six times over

  • Will consume the amount of CO2 created by driving a car 2.2 million miles

  • Will produce roughly 7.8 million lbs of net oxygen annually; enough for more than 20,000 people to breathe

  • Can absorb roughly 300,000 lbs of air pollutants per year, which is a $1.35 million cost savings benefit

  • Will mitigate soil erosion and flooding

  • Are enough in number to provide the same net cooling effect (when planted next to a building) provided by running 300,000 room-size air conditioners (operating 20 hours a day
